No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a figure of hostility who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape covert authorities. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his crime policy is that if someone steals your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and clear reality that Christ from scripture advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the persistent defiance against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or not?
America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to what makes it special and magnificent, which is the example of Jesus.
