Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
