Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
