Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
